Living / Family / Great Room

Pictures, mirrors and other thick glass such as table top can be wrapped and packed in ordinary mirror cartons and some bubble wrap. Fragile or valuable fine art and closet doors should be specially crated and handled by a professional mover.

Stereo Gear

Advance preparation is necessary for compact disc players, dvd players and other stereo equipment.

  • Compact and digital video disc players should have all transport screws mostly located on the bottom or back of the unit secured.
  • Most turntables have a lock which should be used to hold the tone arm in place. For extra safety, it's advised to tie a string around the arm to ensure it in its place. In addition securing the platter (where the records are placed) by securing the appropriate screws (which are usually located on the top of the turntable) is recommended. If you cannot find the screws check you owner's manual.

Speakers

Pack speakers in well-cushioned / paper packed dish boxes.

  • Any large or abnormally heavy speakers will usually simply be padded and placed on the truck.

Television

Big Screen televisions will most likely need to be crated prior to moving day. Notify your moving company in advance if you have a big screen or plasma television.

  • When choosing a location for your TV at your new residence, place it on a hard surface at least six feet from your normal viewing point. Most TVs should not be placed in an enclosed space unless proper ventilation is provided. Try to avoid window reflection on the television when deciding on its new place.

Satellite Dish

Contact the satellite dish distributorship for the disconnection and disassembly of this sensitive gear. Depending upon the structure and dimension of the unit, the dish may need to be crated by your professional mover.

Compact Discs, Tapes and Records

Using a layer of crushed packing paper at the bottom of the box place standard compact discs and records on their edge, never place them flat, if the box is not fully packed to a situation they cannot tilt use pieces of cardboard to make they fit and then cover top with another layer of crushed packing paper. Make sure marking the box with a "FRAGILE" mark on at least 3 sides.

  • Cassette tapes should be wrapped individually in packing paper. Place individual tapes on at least 2 layers of packing paper and top them the same.
  • If you don't have the records original covers, wrap each one in soft tissue paper or plastic wrap to protect them from getting scratched. Records are heavy and so should be packed in small boxes (book boxes / medium boxes).

Books

Group books of same size and place in small book cartons/boxes only due to their weight.

  • Pack the books flat, or with the spine bottom down touching the carton. Packing spine upward would cause the glue to break away from the binder.
  • Expensive or sentimental valued books should be wrapped separately before packed in the box.

Photographs

Personal Family videos, photographs, slides or negatives with a sentimental value should be packed in a separate box/carton, not mixed with the other moving boxes and kept away from hot climate. It is best that you take these boxes along with you if possible in case that you're not certain about the way the moving truck has to go until it reaches your new residence,

  • Keep framed photos packed with pads or cushions, positioning them on the edge of a carton.
  • If possible, take exceptional items with you to your new residence.

Silk or Artificial Flowers

Artificial flowers should be always packed in a separate box. Wrap carefully in bubble wrap (1 layer), tissue paper or paper towels. If possible, tighten the base of the flower to the bottom side of the box to prevent tilting and label the carton with "FRAGILE - THIS SIDE UP."

Lamp Bases

Remove the light bulb; wrap the base, harp and bulb with newsprint and bubble wrap separately if possible. Pack them together in the smallest box possible, filling voids with packing paper or newsprint.

Lamp Shades

Do Not wrap lamp shades in newsprint, as the ink will soil the shade. Instead, carefully wrap the shade in a couple of layers of light fabric, a pillowcase, a professional packing paper or a lightweight towel.

  • Use a solid box at least one inch larger each way than the largest shade. Fill in a layer of clean packing paper under the lamp shade to form a good protection, but do not fill around the shade. Put smaller shades inside larger ones, just as long as they do not touch each other. Do Not Pack more then one silk shade in each box to avoid stretching the silk.
  • Never pack other items in the box used for shades.

Glass Table Tops, Outsized Mirrors & Paintings, Marble Pieces , Painting, Statues, Large Vases, Chandeliers and Leaded Glass Shades

Remember to mention any of these items when giving an item list to your moving company for the estimate in order to get an idea of the prices they charge for fitting custom-made cartons or crates and take in consider when choosing your goods that you can take along with you and the items you moving company would carry.

Do not let/pack packing paper come in direct contact with an oil painting.

Rugs

Area rugs are best left handled by your professional moving company.

  • You may want to consider having your area rugs and other large carpets cleaned by a professional carpet cleaning company before your move - you'll receive them back from the cleaners wrapped, rolled and ready for shipping.
  • Make sure that your area rugs or large carpets will be loaded last and unloaded first so when your furniture get off the truck they could be placed in the place you had destined them for on or off the truck without any complication and repositioning them later.

TV Stand/ Stereo Cabinet

Remove & pack glass doors in a mirror carton if fits or a specially made crate with bubble wrap.

Furniture

Your movers will either use shrink wrap or special moving blankets to cover your furniture completely.

  • If any of the furniture you plan to move is made from leather talk to your movers about extra safety wrapping..
  • Wood table corners should be protected using cardboard.
  • Couch pillows will be best protected packed within a large box. A wardrobe box would fit about 3 to 4 of them.

Your piano will be tilted on its side using a special board to hold it, legs will be removed, wrapped and packed separately and then wrapped entirely with thick moving blankets to prevent scratches.

It is good to have a piano tuning company number handy for tuning at your new residence.

Pool Table

Talk to your moving company about moving your pool table and get your impression of how experience they are in the subject, does it involve additional payment and if so how much.

  • But, it's best contacting the store which sold you the pool table for assistance in the subject and don't forget to ask for information about reassembling the table at the destination.
